1) check (a mark or discontinuity on a scale or other hard structure used for aging, caused by cessation of growth and absorption of deposited material due to spawning (hence a spawning check), injury, disease, parasites, or unseasonal lack of food)
2) fish with head and guts removed and backbone cut around, opened and flattened for salting and drying
